How does a doula work with my partner?
Recognizing that comfort levels vary from support person to support person, we empower partners to support baby mamas in a way that feels most comfortable to them. Intimate partners will be able to support mom in a way that doulas never can! Our intention is nurture this bond by stepping in when partner and mom need suggestions and extra support and taking a step back during the time that everyone is coping well. When working together as a team in a loving and nurturing environment labour and birth can be a profound bonding opportunity for couples!
When we are in labour at what point does our doula join us?
Your doula will join you when you and your partner need support coping with labour contractions. Early labour, especially for first time moms, can sometimes take a long time! At this point you will still be able to continue with your day to day activities....and you should. We know this is an exciting point that you have been waiting AGES to get to. However, the BEST thing you can do is distract yourself until you cannot distract yourself anymore. Go for a walk, watch a movie, SLEEP or maybe bake your baby a birthday cake! During this time, we will be checking in with you by phone to see how you are progressing and coping. And as soon as you need the support, we will be there!
I have my partner/mom/sister for support. Why would I need a doula?
Family members are amazing support and we are so lucky to have them! However, labour is intense and it is often incredibly difficult for support people to witness their loved one in pain and not be able to do anything about it. As your doula, as much as we will care for and nurture you, we do not have the personal connection and are able to detach ourselves in a way that family members cannot. Additionally, we are trained and experienced in one providing physical and emotional comfort measures to help mom, and her support people, cope.
What happens if my doula is at another birth or sick? Do I still get care?
Absolutely! Melissa works as our primary birth doula and Deanna provides back up in the unlikely event that she cannot be there. As mother and daughter we are incredibly connected to eachother and one of the unique aspects of our mother-daugther team is the ease in which Deanna can take on the role of your birth doula.
